Nestled within the immutable walls of St. George's, Britain's oldest surviving Lutheran church, our presence pays homage to centuries of faith, fellowship, and charity. Dating back to 1763, this hallowed structure, masterminded by the eminent sugar refiner Dederich Beckmann, initially served as a haven for immigrant sugar bakers, their families, and war refugees who settled in the area. Patronised by none other than Queen Victoria's mother, the Duchess of Kent, who not only supported the local school but also was a regular attendee, St. George's exudes a sense of venerable grace.
Worship at Holy Word seeks to embody the ethos of “Beauty, mystery, and nostalgia.” Recognising God as the unchanging and timeless creator, we embrace limits of human wisdom and the depth of His revelation. Our church endeavours to make worship accessible to all, providing opportunities for growth through a balance of familiar and thought-provoking hymns and prayers. By utilising the liturgy and sound Biblical preaching, worshippers are encouraged to delve into the magnificence of God’s work in our salvation. We are a church that looks and feels like a church. We welcome all to join our community and explore the enduring beauty of God’s Holy Word.
